“The human backside is a dimension architects seem to have forgotten.”
- William Whyte
Chairs are social media. Interactions thrive from a pell-mell chair arrangement that eventual gravitate towards order. What we have designed is a chair that functions in a number of arrangements based on a social condition- a chair can be arranged as a meeting place, a lone reader sitting under a tree, a group of co-workers sharing lunch & stories of their last Yankees game outing, two friends facing each other and playing a game of chess, and tourist sitting with an empty chair between trying to figure out the city map. Each of these narratives is an impromptu happening and less orchestrated maneuver.
When is a chair more than just a chair? Maybe sometimes it is a table…or a lunch counter…or a game board. Our chair might find its equivalent in the world of cutlery in the Spork ©, that magnificent offspring of the spoon and the fork. The typical chair might invite a person to sit against its back with proper posture, or hugging the edge- side saddle, or perhaps even facing backwards with your arms draped over the back. It would all depend on the formal aspects of this typical chair. Our chair invites all of these positions- forward, back and side saddle. It is groupable and stackable. The table back has a cup holder, area for lunching and perhaps in some versions, an etched gaming half board for chess and checkers. The board would allow two (2) chairs to be placed together to get the full board.
The chair is shown in wood and metal versions. The component parts are easily mass produced. Our intention if chosen by the Conservancy is to hopefully be involved in managing the development and fabrication of the chair. Our concept is to make a chair that is a lo-fi social medium. A typical chair in the park invites one to sit and/or interact. We have tailored the form of our chair to enhance those interactions and still essential be a chair- a place of respite, laughing, reading, lunching, or just sitting and watching New York go by...
