Name of the organisation: WeDoData
Category: Data-driven applications (mobile or web) big media
Description of the project: This project aims to investigate the wage gap between men and women in french companies. We explored all types of companies, age groups, and regions available.
Instead of presenting the results as a whole we chose to let the user compare him/herself to the median wage of the opposite sex according to his/her job, salary, age and region.
The result is the difference between the user's salary and the median salary of the opposite sex.
As we expected, the results are very unequal and women tend to make less money than men at the same job, age and region.
What data did you use and how did you obtain it?: We used data from the french statistics office INSEE (institute national de la statistique et des études économiques). Each year, they gather a database called DADS (Déclaration Automatisée des Données Sociales) containing informations given by every company in France including employees and payroll.
INSEE collaborated to the project with a special extract from this database giving us the median wage for each sex, for 412 jobs descriptions for all age groups and in 22 french regions.
We used the median wage and not the average wage to level the gap between high and low salaries.
Technical challenges, tools used: The data provided by INSEE were in spreadsheet, that we convert in SQL base.
We worked with Illustrator for design and all the front animations are HTML 5 in responsive design.
